Setting stones in other stones seems like a magic trick. This can create some truly unique designs that incorporate faceted stones, cabs, pearls, glass, and enamels! Here is an opportunity to combine several of your skills into a more complex setting creation. This stone-in-stone setting workshop will focus on the techniques used to create flared or step tube-type settings and carving stone to create unique stone-in-stone settings for jewelry. Students will learn the techniques through demonstrations using tubing to create basic tube settings, drilling stone, and other materials to create unique stone settings. Stone setting will work for a variety of stones such as faceted round for tube setting, rose cut, and cabochon stones. Demos will also include how to use the flex shaft to measure, cut, and set tube settings, and use diamond burs to make holes and alterations.
Students may work alongside the demos, or choose just to observe and learn. The settings discussed include standard tube setting, telescoping settings, & bezel settings.
Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry or equivalent. Students should have some soldering skills.
