The rolling mill, although sometimes intimidating, is a basic piece of equipment that can immediately increase the possibilities and potential of your studio. In this workshop, we will discuss various rolling mill options, operations, maintenance, creating texture, and more.  We will demystify the fears about them to make them a great piece of working equipment for you!

Students will become informed about affordable options available to them before making a purchase of equipment, and familiarize those who had made purchases they are intimidated by. They will be able to judge which mill is right for their studio needs, how to maintain it, and how to get the most out of the mill. An economy mill can be purchased for as little as $350! These are great for a small studio just starting up.

Demonstrations will include a variety of ways to use the rolling mill to customize your designs with texture, pattern, and changing the profiles of the metal.

All classes include the video recording, which you will have access to for 60 days after the class. The Zoom link and handout (if any) will be available 24 hours before the class starts.

Textures

  • Fabric
  • Cut paper
  • Organic materials like leaves and corn husks

Metal

  • Copper sheet. 16-20ga sheets are the best way to practice. You can get sheets of copper from most hardware stores. K&S Metal Co. usually has a display with several metal sheets to choose from. Make sure they are annealed or dead soft.
  • Sterling sheet. A small piece of silver is nice to practice your techniques. The width and gauge are optional depending on how you want to work and if you plan to use it for a finished piece. I’d recommend annealed or dead-soft metal  between 16-20g.
