Instructor: Jennifer Stenhouse

The beautiful and delicate art of filigree has been practiced around the world for millennia. It is a lace-like patterning created by constructing a silver or gold frame filled with finely twisted and flattened wires. During this class, we will practice basic soldering skills, learn new soldering techniques, and jewelry craftsmanship through demos & exercises that are designed to introduce new skills, increase your knowledge about filigree, as well as, give you tips and tools that will make soldering simple with a variety of solders. The focus of the exercises will be on filigree construction. We will begin with the basics of the frame with sterling, making consistent fill with fine silver, then putting the frames and fill together. Then we will work on forming the filigree by doming and working on a ring.

Recommended Materials

You will need a couple of feet of sterling 16ga round wire, a foot or two of 16ga square, and 1 oz of 26ga round fine silver. Also, a wide variety of shapes and gauges of wire are available and are great to add to your designs.

We will use heavier 16ga gauge wires for the frame in sterling and lighter gauges for the twisted fill wires. But it’s nice to have a little variety more your designs. Having a selection of beads and stones is not only fun but provides punch to your design ideas. Your selection of unique objects and colors makes your work interesting and different.
