Instructor: Jeff de Boer

Join master metalsmith Jeff de Boer for an inspiring two-day online workshop exploring the art and mechanics of articulation. In this hands-on class, students will construct the same articulating ring Jeff has been sharing on social media—an elegant miniature mechanism that introduces the fundamentals of movement in metal.

Day One focuses on fabrication. Jeff guides participants step-by-step through layout, cutting, forming, and assembly techniques used to create a fully functioning articulated ring.

Day Two expands into theory and imagination. Jeff demonstrates a range of related mechanisms from jewellery and historical armour, discussing how movement can be designed, controlled, and expressed. Participants will experiment with sketches and small prototypes, exploring how these principles can be applied to their own creative projects.

This class is ideal for jewellers, armour enthusiasts, and curious makers who want to add motion and storytelling to their work. All skill levels are welcome—only a sense of adventure and a love of tiny mechanical marvels is required.

All classes include the video recording, which you will have access to for 60 days after the class. The Zoom link, handouts, video(s), and other important information can be found by clicking on the individual class link on the "My Courses" page. The Zoom link and handout (if any) will be available 24 hours before the class starts.

You also get 1 free session of Open Studio Access (OSA) in the month following your class. The Zoom link can be found on the course video access page.
