In this project-based workshop, students will learn how to create a cup-style bezel setting for a marquise-shaped stone using sheet metal. You’ll see how a simple metal disc can be transformed into a beautiful, custom-fit setting.
Demonstrations will cover every step of the process, including disc cutting, dapping, shaping, soldering, finishing, and stone setting techniques. Students are encouraged to create both practice samples and finished components for use in future jewelry pieces, or they can simply observe and complete their projects later.
We’ll also share practical soldering and construction tips that can be applied to a wide range of future metalworking projects.
Participants are encouraged to work with sterling silver sheet to create samples and finished projects, but copper or brass sheet will work as well.
Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry/Metals skills. You will need the ability and tools to solder.
All classes include the video recording, which you will have access to for 60 days after the class. The Zoom link, handouts, video(s), and other important information can be found by clicking on the individual class link on the "My Courses" page. Using different wire gauges and profiles—round, square, half-round, triangle, and rectangular—gives students a wide range of design options and adds depth to their work. These wire shapes are ideal for creating bands, earrings, and pendant components.
For this project, you’ll only need about 1" of 22-gauge sheet and 3" of 16-gauge wire to make a ring with a marquise setting. The demo features 10–12 mm faceted marquise stones.
Affordable practice stones can be found in mixed assortments from sellers like Verzazio on Etsy, and marquise stones are also available from suppliers such as Rio Grande.
It will be necessary to have a soldering setup.
