Pearls have gone from a traditional symbol of feminine purity to a potent image of political strength and a fashion statement for men and women. Understanding knotting and stringing can extend the life of these time-honored adornments. Join Julia, as she shows you hand-knotting basic skills using silk thread and your beads of choice. Bonus - it requires a little patience, but few tools! Learn how to protect pearls and gemstones from damage and loss with this essential jewelry technique.

Suggested Materials:
- Pearls or beads

Silk thread - size D, E, or F (a doubled thread must pass through your pearls, choose diameter accordingly)
- Twisted wire beading needles - Heavy (#10) and/or Medium (#8)
- French wire (bullion) (get a selection of sizes in your color of choice)
- Clasp - a fish hook clasp is traditional - but please choose something you like!
- Jeweler's cement
Required Tools:
- Tweezers (AA pattern) and awl or knotter tool
- Scissors or flush cutters
- Small twist drill bits or (optional)
Optional Tools:
