In this project-based workshop, we will explore a simple basket setting construction with wire. The simple wire basket setting is a great alternative for faceted, cabochon, free form stone, and found objects. Demonstrations will include a variety of ways to use wire to customize your designs and set objects like stones in prong settings. Students are encouraged to produce both samples and finished elements for jewelry applications. They can also watch and make pieces later! We will discuss a few great soldering and construction tips that apply to several soldering applications.

Participants are encouraged to work in sterling silver 18g wire to create samples and finished projects. But copper or brass wire will work as well.

Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry/Metals and ability to solder independently.

Supply List for Students

The links below will take you to RioGrande.com or other suppliers. To see prices for precious metal items, you need a free Rio Grande account. Registered Little Metal Foxes students can access the Rio for Schools program for significant savings (discounts and flat-rate shipping). This site may contain Amazon and other affiliate links. If you purchase something through the link, at no cost to you, we may receive a small commission on qualifying purchases.

Recommended Materials:

Students don't need a lot of material to work with. Two feet of 18 or 20 gauge wire will be all the metal you are likely to need for the class! Faceted, free form, and cabochon stones, as well as found objects, can personalize each person’s work.

I like to get a little 100-carat assortment of stones to play with from Verzazio on Etsy for about $30. The link is below.

It's necessary to have a personal soldering set up.
