All levels of metalsmith and jewelry artists can appreciate beautiful tools. Especially those tools that have been used by artisans or crafty folks before us.

A search for old jewelry tools on E-bay or a trip to the antique mall, estate, garage, and yard sale can unearth some diamonds in the rough. Even more meaningful are tools passed from a mentor down to an apprentice.

Much like a rough diamond, the forgotten, abused, neglected, or found tool may need some roughing, finishing, and polishing to achieve its true beauty. Under all the dents, scars, rust, and tarnish is an amazing tool with a history, a story, and another lifetime of service at your bench.

Join Chris from Lion Punch Forge as he walks students through the process of bringing a neglected hammer and maybe some other tools back to life again. In the process feel good about recycling and reusing something that may have been considered garbage.

Topics covered will include:

  • Antique tools
  • Recycling
  • Rust removal
  • Working with steel
  • Sanding tactics
  • Polish
  • Hand tools
  • Power tools
  • Handle finish
