The addition of gold accents adds value and a color option to your work while still remaining affordable. This workshop will focus on an introduction of gold and silver accents through flowing solder into recessed areas of textured metal.  The solder inlay technique can be done with a variety of solders to add color, and your best results will be on a sterling or copper base sheet. This is a great way to experiment on a budget! Instruction will include information that will familiarize you with how different solders work. Students will learn through instruction, demonstration, and later practicing the techniques using solder and sheet to construct pieces that can be used for all kinds of jewelry and wearable art. The focus will be on the essentials of surface treatments using gold and silver solders. Also, the proper use of tools and equipment, studio safety, and finishing techniques. Project demos will include making pendant samples using sheet with gold and silver solder accents.

Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate, with ability to solder

Recommended Materials

Options For the Flux

There are several fluxes you can use to protect the surface. A good flux will create a fire-coat on the surface covering all of the metal. Prepared fluxes include Cuprinol, Pripp’s, and Stop-Ox II work very well for this process. I like the Stop-Ox II. It must be applied as you are warming up the metal. I use the 8oz spray bottle for application.

  • Paste Flux (or a Borax and water-based flux.)
  • Stop-Ox II from Rio Grande. This is water-soluble and non-flammable. I recommend the 8 oz spray bottle.
