In this project-based workshop to create a cup bezel setting for a marquise shape stone, constructed with sheet metal. A simple disc can be turned into a beautiful setting for a marquise-shaped stone. Demonstrations will include cutting disc, dapping, cutting, soldering, finishing, and setting techniques. Students are encouraged to produce both samples and finished elements for jewelry applications. They can also watch and make pieces later! We will also discuss a few great soldering and construction tips that can be applied to future soldering endeavors.

Participants are encouraged to work in sterling silver 20 or 22g sheet to create samples and finished projects. But copper or brass sheet will work as well.

Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry/Metals skills. You will need the ability and tools to solder.

Recommended Materials:

A wide variety of wire gauges and wire profiles afford the student a broader range of experience and design possibilities. Wire profiles, like round square, half-round, triangle, and rectangle wire, are great for adding depth to your visual vocabulary! You can use these to create bands for rings, earrings, and pendants. Students don't need a lot of material to work with. But, an inch or so of 22 gauge sheet and maybe 3” of 16g wire will be all the metal you are likely to need to create a ring with a marquise setting. The demo will be with a faceted marquise stone. The ones I will be using are 10 and 12mm long. I like to get a little 100ct. assortment of stones to play with from Verzazio on Etsy for about $30. The link is below. You can also find faceted marquise stones from a wide variety of sources, including Rio Grande.

It will be necessary to have a soldering set up.
