Alternative Stone Setting Series

This class will be recorded, and the recording will be available for students to access through their Little Metal Foxes accounts for a full month after the live class.

This stone setting workshop will focus on the techniques used to create flush settings using small round faceted stones. There are five basic steps that will create a flush setting! We will work with 3mm faceted round stones and 14g sheet to create a step-by-step sample that illustrates every step of the process. Each student will have a finished sampler for reference at the end of the class. Some students, depending on the student’s skill level, may be able to set additional stones in previously finished work. We will discuss other flush setting possibilities.

Students can practice and work on samples in copper, sterling, or brass. Participants are encouraged to try working in sterling silver sheet to create finished projects, as well.

Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry/Metals skills. You will need the ability and tools to solder.

Recommended Materials:

• 3mm white CZ’s
• 14g sterling sheet (or heavier) (optional)
• Or 14g copper (or heavier)
• 3mm stone setting bur (same size as the CZ’s)
• Small drill bit (about 1mm) to drill a pilot hole
• Drill bit between 1.5-2.25mm ( ½ to ¾ the size of the stone)
• Burnishing tools (burnisher, ball-ended burnishing tool, large tapestry needle, and I will show you how to make one from a broken bur or drill bit)
• Center punch
• Small ball-peen hammer
• Beeswax or bur life

Recommended Tools:

• Jeweler saw & 2/0 blades
• Pin vise
• Ball burs
• Small tweezers
• Optivisor
  Or MegaView Magnifier headset
• Bench pin
• Drilling tool/flex shaft
• Emery paper, 200/400/600 from the hardware store
• Fine sharpie
• Sticky stick (that a stick-like tool with a sticky substance like wax or tape on the end
• Big ‘ole steel washer (hardware store)
• Polishing tools like silicone or pumice wheels with the flexshaft
